2015 Acura ILX – A Great All-Rounder

The 2015 Acura ILX is Acura’s take on a compact luxury sedan, a car that is both desirable and affordable. The automotive market is not lacking in this segment at the moment, so the 2015 Acura ILX will face stiff competition here. However, Acura did quite a good job with it and despite being based on a rather mundane Honda Civic, the car looks and feels like premium vehicle, albeit an entry-level one. That doesn’t surprise us, as the solid and affordable quality has been Acura’s major selling point for a while now.

The exterior design combines finely sculpted fluid lines with slightly more muscular edges, in a very eye-pleasing mix of elegance and sportiness. The elongated bonnet and short rear deck have long been an excellent recipe for well proportioned, good looking sedans (and not only), and the 2015 Acura ILX is no exception.

However, if you’re looking for a fast sporty sedan, this might not be the best choice. Although not a slouch by any means, this is no fast car either. It comes in FWD configuration only and has a choice of two petrol powered engines (the hybrid being no longer available). The base line is a 2.0 liter engine developing 150 HP and 140 lb-ft of torque. Mated to the 5 speed automatic gearbox, it will launch the car from 0 to 60 MPH in a modest 9 seconds time. That is the average for mainstream sedans, but a bit slower for a premium vehicle. The second option is a more powerful 2.4 liter engine, offering 201 HP and 170 lb-ft. The only transmission option for this engine is a 6 speed manual gearbox and in this configuration, the ILX will launch from 0 to 60 MPH in more adequate (for its sporty aspirations) 7.1 seconds time. Both engines are quite economical, averaging 28 MPG for the 2.0 liter and 25 MPG for the sportier 2.4 liter engine.

That being said, it feels more than suitable for both daily commuting and spirited driving. The driving position, the pedals layout and precise steering make the lack of sheer performance less noticeable, but the more enthusiastic drivers might feel the need for a sportier suspension tune, though.

On the inside, the 2015 Acura ILX over matches its exterior good looks. It has enough room to accommodate four adults with ease and the ride quality is exactly what you’d expect from a luxury sedan, very relaxed and very quiet, keeping a nice balance between handling and comfort. Features like perforated-leather heated seats, 8-way adjustable driver seat, multi-view rear camera, automatic dual-zone climate control, 17” alloy wheels, 7 speaker sound system, keyless entry and push button ignition, they all come as standard. If you still feel this wouldn’t impress your mates at the pub enough to overlook the minor lack in performance, there are also optional extras like automatic dimming mirror, an even better 10 speakers sound system blown by a Sirius Satellite head unit with ELS surround and song-by-voice features, SatNav with voice recognition, active sound control, real time traffic and weather, contrast stitching for interior trim, stainless sport pedals and red instrument illumination (we know red makes anything go faster).

Safety wise, the 2015 Acura ILX will please even the most demanding customers. Front seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and head restrains come in as standard, as do the anti-lock brakes, traction control and stability program. Additionally, it has scored a 4 stars rating for frontal impacts and a 5 stars rating for lateral impacts in NHTSA testing.

With a price starting from $29,000 for the base line, the 2015 Acura ILX is a perfect contender for those looking for modern, technology oozing and comfortably well equipped daily driver on a budget. Value for the money, we reckon this little sedan will be hard to beat!
