2015 Porsche Macan is possibly the best compact SUV in the world
“Not a compact SUV, instead, it’s the first sports car in the segment”. This sentence defines the last and the most impressive SUV the world has ever seen – the 2015 Porsche Macan. Born from the same people that brought us the Carrera GT, the 911 Turbo and the Cayman GTS, the 2015 Porsche Macan inherits all the sport values of the trio while packing them in a whole new form of an urban SUV. It is smaller in comparison with the Cayenne. It is lighter as well, but it is more intensive and more perfect than the older brother.
Based upon the same architecture underpinning the Audi Q5, the Porsche Macan is the second Porsche SUV that shares some of its components with other vehicles within the Volkswagen Group. With lightweight chassis design and newly developed supporting structures that make the Macan more rigid in comparison with any other car from the segment, Porsche created a vehicle that brings a breeze of fresh air into the segment of humble and dignified small SUVs. This one is far away from the word humble, although, looking at it, it becomes clear that the Macan does not want to flash all of its impressive guts packed underneath fabulously crafted aluminum panels. Despite being built upon the same architecture as the Audi Q5, the Macan is 2.7 inch longer, but 1.1 inch lower than the Q5. This makes it more planted and much more aggressive. Also, Porsche widened its tracks for 1,37 inches which gave the Macan a much more sportier feel and looks in comparison with basically, any other similar SUV (except perhaps the Range Rover Evoque).
The similarities with other similar vehicles from Volkswagen group stop at the core. Porsche did everything they could to make this a proper Porsche, which means that the Macan got an all new suspension set up, specifically calibrated Four wheel drive, exceptionally crafted interior and the equipment list that would shame even the most luxurious and expensive cars of today.
By installing a few sporty features learned from the sports cars they built, Porsche succeeded in their efforts to make the Macan a real sports SUV. It is not every day that you see an SUV powerful and planted enough to accelerate to 62 in 4.6 seconds. That is exactly the time needed for the Macan Turbo to hit the magic mark. The Macan S and Macan Diesel are available too, but their engines with 340 HP and 260 HP cannot match the 3.6 liter turbocharged V6 monster packed in the Turbo. The car is also available with Sport Chrono Package and with amenities such as PDK, Active all-wheel drive and Porsche Traction Management, Automatic Brake Differential (ABD), Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR), PASM and many other. All of this enables the Macan a handling of a small car, to provide the true Porsche feel decorated with a sound that only the sport engine can articulate.
Despite being a sports car, Porsche did not forget about off-road capabilities this car has to have. Off-road mode is standard equipment and it can be selected to speed of up to 50 mph. After the selection, the transmission becomes adjusted for off road use, and the four wheel drive changes its character thus providing more traction on unpaved terrain. Also, the vehicles with air suspension can increase the ground clearance of up to 1.5 inch.
All in all, the Macan represents the highest peak of the compact SUV segment. It is the best compact SUV that ever roamed the earth, or, like those from Porsche would put it, it is “like the Cayenne, only more concentrated, urban and intensive”.
