It’s been 12 years in the making. It’s been way too long but now, we’ve got a fantastic new car with a brand new design that is both luxurious and elegant. Volvo is now under Chinese ownership. But all they’ve done is put in money, and left the Swedes to do the rest. What’s the result? An all-new 2015 Volvo XC90 that is full with all new technology and innovative features that have set a high bar for the other cars in its class.
The new Volvo XC90 has the new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). This new state-of-the-art architecture has enabled Volvo to make significant improvements in the safety of the car as well as better protection for the driver and passengers in a worst-case scenario.
Volvo is really turning some heads with the new XC90’s design. The company has introduced an electrical architecture in the 2015 Volvo XC90 as well as the future models, which will bring the level of the car’s intelligence to new heights. The design consists of four domain masters in its network – vehicle dynamics, infotainment, car body and safety. Each domain is connected to the other domains that work together as a unit to provide more safety and protection to the driver and passengers.
Along with all these new safety features, the 2015 Volvo XC90 has an all new design both in the interior and exterior. The new XC90 boasts a bold iron mark that has the iconic Volvo arrow that is diagonally slashed across the grille. This new model also bears a new, and distinct T-shaped daytime running lights. The DRL is given the nickname “Thor’s hammer” which has brought a different face to new cars for 2015 from Volvo as well as the upcoming generation models.
The XC90’s bonnet has also been changed in its appearance. Volvo’s iconic vertical taillight is still present but has a slight change that makes its appearance more tattoo-like and less smooth on the curves. This new rear taillight will also be used in the new Volvo cars in the future.
The outside shows outstanding details and finesse that has brought the 2015 Volvo XC90 back into the front-lines with its competitors. But Volvo has yet to finish what they’ve started. The expectation is that Volvo should have taken a step up in the interior. And I’m happy to say that yes, they have changed the inside, and it is amazing! The many buttons that were placed on the center dock has been replaced with a tablet-sized touch screen control console that is the head captain of this ship. Everything from the music, temperature control, car details and the smooth and easy to use GPS, are all reported to the head captain awaiting orders from the captain commander. (Which is you, the driver.)
The amazing part that Volvo has done in the 2015 model is to remove all the buttons and leave it all to an almost button-free system. This brings simplicity and class to the car’s interior design and makes way for more striking inner cabin. The materials inside the XC90 include luxurious Nappa leather and wood that is detailed with fine hand-craftsmanship. The gear lever, start/stop button and volume controls are all made from diamond-cut crystal glass that a famous Swedish glass-maker designed. Volvo went past the limits in this new Volvo.
The chassis is also brand new. Analyzing the driving dynamics, the XC90 brings a smooth, solid ride that has a sharp handling response. The chassis has a double wishbone front suspension and a completely new integral axle in the rear that has a leaf spring made out of lightweight material.
The 2015 Volvo XC90 offers only a range of two liter, four cylinder models. They all bring great fuel economy as well as outstanding performance on the road. The top trim level is a twin engine that is both supercharged and turbocharged with an electric motor that’s integrated. This trim model puts out around 400 hp with only 64 g/km of carbon dioxide emissions. This emission level is significantly low when looking at other cars in its class. The maximum torque in this model is over 600 N/m (442 lb-ft) and can accelerate from 0-100 in 6.4 seconds.
Other 2015 Volvo XC90 models are the D5 twin turbo diesel engine that produces 225 hp, 470 N/m (367 lb-ft) and two different diesel powered engines: The T6 engine with a supercharger and turbo with 320 hp and a maximum torque of 400 N/m (295 lb-ft) and the T5 engine with 254 hp and 350 N/m (258 lb-ft). All of the engine models come standard with an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Volvo has truly outdone themselves with the 2015 Volvo XC90 and with the starting price of $48,900; it’s a pretty fair price for all of the luxury and ingenuity that comes packaged together in this car.
