Audi A6 – State of the art supermachine tailored for a businessman
Introducing an all new generation of the Audi A6 in 2011, Audi leaped a big step forward into the unknown with a car so advanced that it brought a few amenities not seen on any other vehicle in segment (including comparable BMW 5 series and Mercedes E-class). The new Audi A6, codenamed C7, has been constructed on a new MQB platform and built using aluminium, high-strength steel and composite materials while every part of it has been newly designed.
Remaining similarly dimensioned (it is a bit lower and just a bit shorter) as before, the Audi A6 stayed planted in the D segment where it fights its way for the buyers in the most competitive segment out there. Audi lengthened the wheelbase significantly (2.75 inches), while the width becomes bigger too. All of this means that the new A6 looks and feels much sportier and much more planted than before. That is the recipe for success in the segment where the sporty BMW 5 series has been the top performer for years. Using aluminium components on the chassis, Audi managed to build a car that is much more rigid in comparison with the predecessor. This means that the driving feel is much better, which was confirmed by independent journalists testing the vehicle.
Audi states that 20 percent of the new A6 is built using aluminium. Besides the aluminium suspension components, almost every exterior panel has been built using this material. This way the center of gravity has been lowered which additionally enhanced the driving characteristics. In addition, a five link front suspension and a “self-tracking trapezoidal-link suspension” at the back offer exceptional grip further improved by advanced automatically adjustable dampers and springs. High-end stuff commonly available at top of the range vehicles enabled the A6 to receive wheels of up to 20 inch in diameter and to gain a top of the line Quattro all wheel drive system regarded as the best by many.
Audi prepared high-end four cylinder and six cylinder engines for the propulsion. At first, Audi introduced only the turbocharged and supercharged units, but later on, the German manufacturer added a naturally aspirated 2.8 liter engine as well. Nevertheless, the most powerful engine is a three liter TFSI developing 300 HP. Besides that engine, the Audi A6 is available with three liter TDI diesel engine developing 245 HP and two liter TFSI with the same power output. Thanks to advanced aerodynamic features, the A6 is possibly the most aerodynamic vehicle in its class – enabling the car to fully utilize the engines. With the aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.26 Cd, light weight and specially adapted engines, even the most powerful three liter TFSI with Quattro and an all wheel drive can manage almost 27 mpg while emitting 276 g/CO2 per mile. The car is available with automatic transmission (multitronic and S-tronic with twin clutch system) and the equipment on board can almost mimic that on the most impressive Audi A8. High- end equipment includes “a DVD changer, a digital radio tuner, the Audi music interface for integrating a mobile player, a TV module, and the Bose surround sound system. The pinnacle of all sound systems is the 1,300-watt Advanced Sound System from Bang & Olufsen”.
All in all, the Audi A6 is one of the most amazing cars on the road and if equipped with the “right” equipment (such as LED lights, S-line trim, Quattro AWD system, S-tronic transmission and the most powerful engine), it truly shows the might of the brand with four rings. At the end, such a car can accelerate to a 62 in 5.5 seconds – this is sports car territory.
