The 2015 BMW 320i is Possibly the Best Entry Car Money Can Buy
“Sleeker Styling. Thrilling Performance.” is the catchphrase used by BMW to describe their best known and best rounded up car in the lineup – the 2015 BMW 320i. As we recall, the 320i came to the market for the 2014 model year as entry level car for the 3 series and now for 2015, the car continued to roll following the success of the previous 3 series iterations. As the 3 Series is a volume seller and it, apparently, brings almost 30 percent of BMW’s revenue, the entry level car better be good.
Following the well-known principles of BMW styling, even the entry level 3 series is a technological and stylistic showdown. Apart from being equipped with tons of luxury equipment inside (such as the wonderful iDrive system, automatic climate control, multi-function steering wheel and other), BMW succeeded to provide top notch styling even for the cheapest 3 series in their lineup. First of all, looking at it from the outside no one would ever suspect that this is an entry level vehicle. It follows the aggressive lines of better equipped and more expensive units, but it is also a bit more subtle and sleeker with wonderful 17 inch wheels, nicely sculpted front end with a kidney grille and sharply styled lights. However, there is a way to recognize that this is a 320i even though the plaques were removed from the car. Every more powerful petrol powered BMW 3 series is equipped with a double rear exhaust, while the 2015 BMW 320i has only one rear exhaust which reveals to a keen eye that this car is powered by a downgraded two liter Twin power turbo engine.
The two liter turbocharged engine is one of the most important engines in the BMW lineup. Even though it powers the 328i and develops 245 HP, the engine prepared for the 320i has 180 HP and 200 lb ft of torque. That is not “BMW-kind-of-power”, but it is enough to propel the car to 60 in just over 7 seconds thus making the RWD sedan a rather fast car despite its “entry-car” credentials.
Obviously, sportiness is something that is very important to BMW; consequently, the car can be equipped with the M Sport package, giving it a better looking front end, 18 inch wheels with Bridgestone Potenza tires and some additional elements in the cabin including a three spoke M sport steering wheel, better looking decorations and more sporty styling than before.
Nevertheless, the interior of the 2015 BMW 320i is still a rather nice place to be in even without the M Sport package. The seats are comfortable and the iDrive system is operated through a special switch in the central console while the car still features much of the equipment you’d get from a bit more powerful 328i.
Of course, the most important thing here is the engine. We know that the car with this engine isn’t the fastest in the world, but it can return nice fuel economy. According to BMW, the 2015 320i will return 24/36 mpg which is not the best, but it is far from the worst. With the return and nice performance the car can be a rather formidable partner on twisty roads.
Along with offering the car with RWD and a manual, BMW offers the 2015 320i with a nice eight speed automatic transmission and even with a four wheel drive mostly unavailable for other cars.
