The 2015 Infiniti Q70 Is Changed But Is It Enough?
Infiniti lacks a full-fledged executive sedan. They need something very modern and contemporary to compete with the likes of the Mercedes S-class, the Audi A8 and now, the upcoming BMW 7 series. Their biggest sedans at this point are the 2015 Infiniti Q70 and the Q70L whose exterior dimensions and lavishly decorated elements suggest that should be it. However, it is not. The Q70 L is a bit longer than the standard S-class, but the dimensions aren’t the main issue here. The problem is the outdated chassis, old high-tech gizmos and styling that is rather nicely redesigned for the 2015 model year at this year’s New York Auto Show.
Taking into account that the 2015 Infiniti Q70 sources its tech all the way back from 2010, we can’t help ourselves but to think of it as competitor to the Mercedes E-class and the Audi A6, or even the Caddy CTS. Really, it is a car that is perfectly positioned in this upper segment and the recent redesign just added flair and spirit of the newest Infiniti cars which makes it look young and advanced enough to cope with the market of today.
Revealed at the NY Auto Show, the 2015 Infiniti Q70 and the Q70L bring us a new front end incorporating look that is familiar from the newest Infiniti cars and concept vehicles revealed in the last year or so. Now available with full LED front lights and LED tail lights, the Infiniti Q70 received rather striking lines which means that is now, stylistically, a rather handsome big sedan whose elegant lines boost its aerodynamic efficiency. Interestingly, the level of drag isn’t the same on every Q70 and Q70L available. Depending on the trim level chosen or the body kit ordered, the Infiniti Q70 has aerodynamic efficiency of 0.26 Cd to 0.28 Cd which is, quite frankly astonishing.
Although the exterior received a major revision, it looks like the interior stayed the same. That is not such a bad thing considering that the Infiniti Q70 has a rather opulent interior garnished with best leather and wood available and with the Q70L which brings even more rear seat room thanks to lengthened wheelbase from 114.2 to 120.1 inches, the whole ambiance in the interior is almost like in the full-fledged executive saloon. However, the elements inside aren’t as good or as modern as anyone wanted them to be. The LCD screen inside is just old, the safety tach is outdated and the whole entertainment system is somehow one generation old although the 2015 Infiniti Q70 boasts Infiniti Connection services as standard.
That said, we have to conclude that it would be nice if we got something new inside. Infiniti officials persist that the interior is now quieter thanks to more sound deadening material used, but then again, we don’t know that for a fact.
What we know for a fact is that the entry level Q70 is powered by a 3.7 liter V6 delivering 330 HP while the optional engine is a 420 HP 5.6 liter V8. Both engines can be had with the Q70 and the Q70 L, but the hybrid power train consisting of a 3.5-liter V-6 and 67-hp electric motor can be bought only with the regular Q70. All-wheel drive is available for every version.
