The 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLE Is Subtly Improved But Wonderfully Executed
The Mercedes Benz really fights a tough fight to name their cars the right way. Take for example this 2015 Mercedes GLE. Just a year ago this car was named the M-class and if we go back a few years more we will find that Mercedes named the predecessor of the new GLE the ML-class. So, it’s hard to get the grasp of the naming structure, but here it is in short. G stands for Gelandewagen and the last name in the name points out to the saloon car which corresponds to the specific vehicle. So, the GLE corresponds with the E-class, the GLS with the S-class and the smaller GLC (up until recently named GLK), corresponds with, you’ve guessed it, with the C-class. Actually, it’s not that bad when you think about it.
Nevertheless, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLE is an updated M-class which was revealed three years ago and today, GLE represents the best Mercedes can offer in the mid-size SUV segment. As expected, apart from changing the name, the appearance of the GLE had been changed a bit. Face lifted version adopted the modern touch of Mercedes vehicles, so the lights, the grille and the front bumper are changed and now look much more upscale and modern and in line with the newest Mercedes vehicles such as the new C-class, or even the new S-class. As you probably know, we are waiting for the new E-class which will adopt similar styling as well.
The rear end of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLE received some subtle enhancements as well, but nothing too radical has been done there. On the other hand, a bit more pronounced changes happened on the GLE 63 AMG, which has a new front bumper, better aerodynamic elements at the back and insane engine under the bonnet.
Modifying the M-class, Mercedes certainly did not want to change it from the ground up. The car is already wonderfully executed, nicely sculpted and rather luxurious on the inside. Actually, the interior is something that did not receive any significant changes though Mercedes highlights the addition of the new multi-function steering wheel and updated infotainment system. However, the car did receive new tech inside borrowed from the recently introduced Benz vehicles. Elements such as Crosswind Assist and COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS complement safety equipment and make the car even safer and more refined than ever before.
These elements did not have any impact on the arrangement of the buttons on the inside, but the updated ECO start/stop function, and DYNAMIC SELECT bring some modern touches to the center console where the driver can manage the functions. Additional improvements include new upholsteries, wider selection of interior decorations including stuff such as carbon fiber, aluminum, piano, brown ash, brown eucalyptus, brown burred walnut, etc. All of that just says that the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLE can be as luxurious as the best E-class and that is something not a lot of other SUVs can provide.
Engines and transmission options, as well as the four wheel drive system are carried over from the M-class. That means that the entry level GLE is powered by a four cylinder 2.1 liter diesel engine delivering 204 HP, while the other diesel powered car has a three liter V6 churning out 258 HP and 620 Nm of torque. Petrol powered machines include a three liter V6 twin turbo engine with 333 HP and 480 Nm of torque, as well as the 4,7 liter V8 with 435 HP and 700 Nm of torque.
AMG powered cars are also available and the less powerful one has a 5.5 liter turbocharged engine delivering 557 HP, while the more powerful 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLE 63 AMG S hits 585 HP.
